Apart from ensuring your stress levels stay low, why does decluttering your home matter?

Well, a tidy and clutter free home isn't just rewarding to look at and to impress your friends & family with.,. But there are also many mental and physical benefits to keeping your home clutter and mess free.

Before we start throwing out different advice of how and why you should declutter, we first want to add that we totally understand if your home doesn't stay decluttered for long.

The prime example being: Kids or Pets!

Now, you can have all the best intentions in the world of how you are going to organise, de-clutter, list and make sure your house is as spotless and organised as NASA shuttle missions...but when you have little critters sprinting around your house causing havoc 24/7, it can be extremely tough to keep your rooms mess free.

Well, in the blog, we are going to give you the rundown on the best & more importantly EASIEST, way to keep your home structured, neat and clutter free.

Think of this as your Busy Bins / Marie Kondo declutter collaboration!

The Best Way to Declutter Your Home Room by Room

Start with the Easiest Rooms: Always start with the easiest room. Which basically means, look for the less cluttered ones! It is not only that these rooms are quick and easy to de-clutter, but mentally...seeing immediate results can boost your motivation to get the other rooms sorted!

The Kitchen: Look to throw away any expired food, old pans/pots & even those piling up old Tupperwares (We know the stained ones have flavour, but your cupboards will thank you). Organise your fridge and cabinets so that you are keeping only what you regularly use daily.

Bedrooms: Now, if these are children's bedrooms, we understand how messy they can be. Spend some time with your children & your partner, going through drawers & sorting clothes that you can keep, donate or sell.

Storage Areas (Lofts, Sheds, Garages): Now these are the areas where you most likely chuck all your unwanted items & seasonal decorations, so they are going to be the messiest. Use a little trick called the 3 box method. This means boxing up all your items into 3 categories: Keeping. Donated & Discarding.

Do’s and Don’ts of Decluttering: Essential Tips for Success

Just like in any form of life, there are basic rules that need to be followed, in order to make it a success.

Well, here at Busy Bins, we have put together our essential tips to help you get the most out of your space. By following these simple Do's & Don'ts, you can create a simpler, stress free way of living.

Do’s:

Set Clear Goals: Decide what you want from your de-cluttered goals. Is it that you want more storage? Less clutter to look at? Or, a complete clean up and restructure of your whole house? Choosing what you want out of it, can really help you set clear goals.

Take One Step at a Time: Take your time with it! Rome wasn't tidied in a day (We think that is the saying anyway). If you work all week, set yourself a specific weekend or day each weekend that you are going to clean up. This could be: The bedroom on one day & then the kitchen on another weekend etc. This stops it getting too overwhelming for you.

Donate or Sell: Instead of throwing items away, look to donate or sell them if they are in good, working condition. Think of it as your way of giving back, if you do manage to sell something, then it is extra wonga in your pocket.

Don’ts:

Don’t Hold Onto Items Out of Guilt: Now if they are sentimental items, we know that you need to hold onto them, however if they are gifts that you have received for Christmas or Birthdays and they are items that you really don't need, then don't feel guilty about throwing them away.

Avoid Buying More Storage Bins Before Decluttering: When you see the clutter building up, it can be tempting to just purchase more storage bins, but until you know exactly what you are going to be keeping, buying extra bins can just add to your mess and clutter.

Don’t Expect Perfection Immediately: Don't expect everything to be perfect and organised right away, sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards. It is more important to keep on tidying and organising consistently. By doing it consistently over time, it will become the perfect space that you always imagined.

Common Decluttering Mistakes You Should Avoid

Mistake 1: Tackling Everything at Once

Throwing everything on your shoulders to clean and sort all at once can very easily lead to burnout and the loss of determination to carry on. Instead, ensure that you break it down into smaller, repeatable tasks. So, focus on 1 room at a time & 1 section of the room at a time, to help keep you motivated and make the process a lot easier to manage.

Mistake 2: Over-Organising Instead of Decluttering

It can be very easy to end up buying a load of storage bins & drawers to start organising before you actually do your decluttering. Don't do it! This can lead to you actually organising items that you really don't even need.

First, focus on getting rid of all the things that you don't need, then you can purchase your neat and tidy storage bits.

Mistake 3: Keeping Items Just in Case

Don't ever feel that you need to keep items just in case you may need them in the future. Be honest with yourself...if you haven't used any of the items in the past year, then the chances are that you are never going to use them.

Get rid.

Mistake 4: Being Sentimentally Attached to Everything

We do get it & there are some different circumstances when it comes to parting with sentimental items. If they are very sentimental items, for instance a lost loved ones items, then we would never expect you to get rid of them.

However, if it is a key-chain or gift that you received for getting good grades when you were 12, we think it is time to get rid. Choose a few special items that you really want to keep and set the rest free.

Mistake 5: Not Having a Plan for Discarded Items

Once you’ve decided what to get rid of, don’t just pile it up.

Have a plan for donating, recycling, or responsibly disposing of unwanted items. This keeps your decluttering process moving and prevents your space from going backwards.

How to Organise Your Home After Decluttering

Implement Smart Storage Solutions

Use space-saving storage like baskets, bins, and closet dividers to keep things tidy. Make sure everything has a designated spot, and avoid areas where clutter tends to accumulate.

Vertical storage solutions, such as shelves or wall hooks, can also help to maximise your space.

Create Easy to Follow Systems

Whether it's for paperwork, clothes, or kitchen supplies, create systems that are simple to follow. Label containers and storage areas, so family members know exactly where things belong. Organising your home with clear systems to stop you from keeping things that you no longer need.

Adopt a One In, One Out Rule

We don't expect this to be used on every aspect of your life. So no chucking out your eldest kids! However, for every new item that comes in your house, remove another similar item. For instance, if the children get a new toy, get rid or donate an old toy.

Regularly Declutter Small Areas

Without a routine habit to tackle small areas weekly or monthly, the clutter will build up again. Whether it's a drawer, a shelf, or your desk, these micro-sessions help stop clutter from building up again and keep your home fresh and organised.
