Illustration comparing junk removal services: truck, skip hire truck, and DIY with a car loading items.

Struggling to decide the best way to clear out unwanted items from your home?

Should you take on the task yourself, hire a junk removal service, or rent a skip?

The ultimate battle awaits... Skip Hire vs DIY vs Junk Removal?

When renovating, cleaning or having that big summer clear out, it can be difficult to decide what the best course of action is for your waste & you have three glaring options.

DIY - Pack Your Car, Break Your Back, Transport it to your local tip yourself.

Junk Removal Service - Hire a private junk removal company to come and take away all your waste.

Skip Hire Service - Skip gets dropped off at your property, you fill it, level it up, the skip company comes and collects the skip once completed.

Whether you’re decluttering your living space, renovating a room, or clearing out the shed, choosing the best way to manage all that unwanted stuff can make a big difference in terms of your time, your wallet and the amount of sweat you are willing to lose.

Should you bend those knees, keep the back straight and do it yourself, ring the experts for a junk removal service, or fill that skip right up to the very top?

Yes, picking the right option for yourself can be a tough task, but fear not, as it doesn't have to be.

With our new blog today, we will be pitting all 3 against each other in the ultimate three way.

Let's get comparing!

Overview of Each Option

Junk Removal

Everyone has heard of junk waste removal & may have even used a junk removal company once upon a time. They come to your home, do all the back breaking work & then whisk your waste away.

These companies usually offer a wide range of items that they can collect. This could be anything from:

  • Garden Waste
  • Furniture
  • Appliances
  • Electronics
  • General Waste (Bin Bags etc)

Pros

Convenience: You get a collection date & sit back and relax. The main pro of junk removal is the convenience that comes with it. No transporting the items yourself or figuring out the closest tip that is open on a Sunday, your only day off! Junk removal companies handle everything for you.

Speed: Junk removal services are usually very quick, apart from the council junk removals of course (We love you really Bury Council). Private waste companies may offer services such as next day collection or a specific collection date, so you don't have to worry if you are on a tight schedule. You have just got to hope they turn up now!

Back Saving: Hiring a junk removal service means no heavy lifting. Save your back for the golf course or that big shopping trip you have coming up. As a team of experts will do all the physical work, it is ideal for homeowners who don't have the time, patience, or vertebrae!

Range of Disposal: Removal companies have the capabilities to properly dispose of a lot of different materials, Items such as electronics or hazardous waste need special handling & disposal methods.

Cons

Cost: Out of the 3 options, this one could well be the most expensive, especially if you are using it for large or multiple loads of junk that needs clearing. If it is just for an individual collection, make sure to compare junk removal & skip prices for the best deal.

Less Control: As long as you use a reputable, fully licensed waste company you are fine, but if you are desperate and end up posting your rubbish on facebook, you will find an influx of messages from cowboy removalists (We have just made that word up). The majority of these may be legal companies, but if you choose the person who quotes £20 to move 80 wheelbarrows of dirt, it is most likely going to be fly-tipped.

Always be aware of this.

Unpredictable Pricing: There are stories out there of junk companies turning up and then adding £50 onto the price. Costs can quickly add up if the pile is bigger then they expected. Make sure to get a solid quote in writing & to send across any pics across of all items that you want removing.

Or...if you wanted to avoid the awkward conversations about prices, you could always use a junk removal service that has a fixed price for all your household items.

Would you believe it, but that's us!

At Busy Bins, we understand that nobody wants those conversations or to feel like they are being pressured to pay an extra £20 because that item wasn't part of the quote. This is why all our prices are fixed on our website, so you know exactly what you are paying & what is being collected.

Skip Hire

These over-sized steel baskets that get picked up, dropped off, filled and taken away. Skips are a popular choice for larger projects & renovations. They are mostly used for:

  • Home Renovations.
  • Large Garden Clean Ups.
  • Construction Waste.
  • Full House Clearances.
  • Event Clean Ups.
  • Commercial Waste.

Pros

Flexibility: Hiring a skip allows you to go at your own pace. You don't have to rush around making sure all your hallways are clear and that the junk is nearly piled up. Once the skip is delivered, you are allowed a few days or weeks to hire it out and fill it up! This means you have plenty of time to organise and pile the waste up as and when you can!

Suitable for Larger Projects: Skips are perfect for larger projects or renovations that it is going to create a lot of waste. There are plenty of skip sizes out there which are ideal for a range of projects!

You can view our skip sizes here: https://busybins.co.uk/skip-hire

Convenient Disposal: No scrambling to the trip or having to fork out an extra £50 to the junk removers for your rubbish removal. All your waste is packed together & once you're done, the skip company comes and whisks it away...never to be seen again!

As long as you pay your bill that is.

Cons

Need for Space: It can be hard enough finding the space as it is, however by hiring a skip, you need to ensure that you have a suitable spot for it to go.

If you have limited space this can be a bit of a pickle.

Possible Permits Required: If your skip is going to be placed on a road or pavement, you may need to seek a permit from your local council. This can involve spending a bit of extra cash & time which is always an inconvenience, especially if you are desperately needing the skip delivered.

Self-Loading: The back breaking work is here! The skip may have arrived, but now is the time to fill it...if you have a lot of bulky items or struggle with mobility, then using skip hire companies isn't the best option.

Cost Considerations: For larger projects, skip hire is a convenient choice, however if you need a smaller amount of waste moving, it isn't going to be the most cost-effective option for you. A skips price all depends on a number of things: The size, the duration, permits & any additional charges if you overfill. Compare skip hire companies as you go for the best price.

Potential for Overfilling: If you get a bit gun-ho with your skip packing & end up overfilling the skip, you may face some extra charges once your skip is due to be collected. In some case, the skip hire may even refuse to collect your waste disposal load until it is level.

DIY Disposal

Do It Yourself Time!

If hiring a skip or junk removal company isn't going to be ideal for your wallet & you have transportation, then doing it yourself may be the best option!

This could be for:

  • Small Amounts of Waste.
  • Quick Clean Ups.
  • Budget Constraints.
  • Weekly Spruces.
  • Old Children's Toys & Games.

Pros

Cost Savings: The biggest advantage by far! By disposing of waste yourself you can save yourself some serious money. DIY waste management means you are basically only paying for the petrol in your car.

You cant treat yourself to some food on us!

Control Over the Process: By managing the waste yourself, you have all the decisions on how and where each item is going. This means you could give some away on FB, recycle items, donate furniture to charity or up-cycle if wanted. This level of control is a fantastic way to help you make each item go to where it is responsibly disposed of.

Flexibility in Timing: With skip hire, you do get a bit of time to pack your skip, however it doesn't have a patch on doing it yourself. You can work at your own pace, there is no need to speak to anyone, wait for a skip to be delivered, or worry about it being picked up. This gives you time to sort through your belongings and decide.

Cons

Time-Consuming: Disposing of waste can be very time consuming, especially if you have a large amount of items that need disposing of. This could equal more trips to your local tip, which could be hours or a whole days worth of travelling back and forth.

Hard Labour: Again with the back breaking work. If you are dealing with furniture, you may have to break it up to squeeze it into your car or you may have to be bending down and lifting multiple items. This can take a toll on the old vertebrae, even more if you are doing all the heavy lifting yourself!

Transport: Nobody wants to be lugging a large wardrobe onto the tram to take to the tip. Unfortunately, if you don't have access to a vehicle this may be your only option. Always consider if you are able to transport bulky waste items yourself or you may be able to pay a friend £20 for a lift there and back. It would still be cheaper then using a company, even though it is an additional cost.

Potential Safety Risks: If you don't have any help moving heavy items or you aren't experienced, you could put yourself at risk of injury, as well as damaging your vehicle and your sanity!

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Option

The Amount of Junk - Do you have a large load or a small load? For larger loads choose Skip Hire, Mediums loads Junk Removal & Small loads DIY if possible.

Type of Junk - Have you got bulky items? Hazardous materials that need specialist disposal? Ask yourself these questions to figure out what would be the best option.

Budget - Choosing the right option can all depend on your budget. Find the cheapest (but legal) option that you can afford for the waste that you have.

Time and Effort - If you have the time to pack everything away and dispose of it correctly then great, if not always use a reliable waste service with legitimate reviews.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, whether you opt for junk removal, skip hire, or roll up your sleeves and DIY it, disposing of bulky waste is all about finding what works best for you. Nobody else knows your current circumstances better then you do.

So if you wanted to take the hands on approach (Not the sexual harassment kind) or. if you prefer to not lift a finger, which there is no shame in. Sometimes you have to play to your strengths (or lack of back pain).

Remember, the choice is yours.
